Legal Challenges
There currently are several critical legal issues pending that have the potential to seriously impact the future of Maine
Clean Elections. On the state level, there are two lawsuits filed by
the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) that threaten to undermine
the very foundation of the Maine Clean Election Act. On the federal
level, the Supreme Court has acted to overturn decades of precedent in
its ruling on the Citizens United case, and it has also temporarily blocked Arizona from implementing its Clean Elections law.
