Voter Rights in Maine

Æ     If you are registered to vote in Maine , you can vote.

Æ     If you are not registered to vote in Maine , you can register on Election Day and you can vote.

Æ     If you are eligible to vote in your town, you cannot be turned away from the polls. You must be allowed to vote a challenged ballot.

Æ     You may vote at your city or town hall before Election Day.  

Æ     You may request an absentee ballot from your town or city clerk without giving a reason.  

Æ     If you are registering at the polls and do not have identification, you can vote a challenged ballot.

Æ     If you are in line at the time the polls close, you can still register and vote.   

Æ     If you make a mistake, you can get a replacement ballot.

Æ     If you are visually impaired, physically disabled, or are unable to read or write, you can be assisted.   

Æ     You may see a sample ballot and receive instructions on voting procedure.  

Æ     You may not be harassed when voting or be influenced on how to vote.    

Æ     Persons with a felony conviction may not be denied the right to vote.  

Æ     If you have any problems, or you are denied the right to vote, call the Elections Division immediately at 207-624-7650.  

Æ     If you have any questions about early or absentee voting, call your town or city clerk’s office.

Voter Duties in Maine

 

Æ   If you are registering to vote at the polls, you must bring proof of identity and residency.

Æ   If you registered by mail, you MAY be asked to show identification.

Æ   You must fill out the voter registration form completely.

Æ   You should call your city or town clerk’s office, or check their website, to make sure you are registered if you are unsure.

Æ   You should take some time to educate yourself about the candidates and issues that matter most to you.

Æ   If voting by absentee, you must return it to your city or town clerk’s office by 8:00 PM on Election Day. If mailing it, mail it several days before November 2nd, October 29th at the latest.

Avoid Making a Mistake When You Vote

 Mistakes can cause your ballot to be thrown out.

 Improper registration can deny you the chance to vote.

 

Æ   You may vote only for the candidates and issues you care about.  You do not have to vote every office or issue.

Æ   Fill out your voter registration form correctly – check all the boxes – ask questions if you are unsure.

Æ   Bring an ID and proof of residency to register on Election Day.

Æ   Cast a “challenged ballot” even if the poll worker says you are not registered.

Æ   Re-register to vote at your new address every time you move.

Æ   Not sure if you are registered?  Check NOW with your town hall.

Æ   Be sure to sign the envelope of your absentee ballot.

Æ   Be sure to put enough postage (60¢) on your absentee ballot.
